KEN RICHARDSON

As a young man, I arrived in the Springfield area with a banjo on my knee. At that time, I wrote a song titled “Blackbird Stew.”  Since then, I have come to realize a “stew” represents the best possible description of my work.

How does one describe a stew? Certainly, it will contain a variety of ingredients blended together. My work encompasses the collection and utilization of an assortment of materials.  I enjoy using whatever is at hand:  salvaged, recycled, new, organic, found objects, paint. Combinations of these may be included at any  time. The materials can dictate my direction,  or they may simply provide inspiration for new pieces.

Born to quarantine! The pandemic proved to be a rewarding period of personal creative growth. I concentrated on developing drawing and sketching skills and finalizing those images in steel.   That locked down “opportunity” sent me in directions that had previously been unimaginable. More challenging concepts are now brought to fruition, and I have much greater satisfaction with my expression in both two dimensional and three dimensional creations.
