Perhaps their company really started the moment the two fell in love, when Carmel and Terrell Swan put more than their initials together to create Catstudio. As one of the most beloved hand embroidery textile companies of our time, the couples love of travel, artistry and each other have resulted in a cult like following.
In combining a charming nostalgic style with the enduring appeal of hand embroidery we now enjoy an extensive collection of pillows and kitchen textiles– inspired by the popular travel souvenirs of the 20’s and 30’s.
Whimsical, hand drawn maps of popular American vacation destinations, and more exotic tourist locales abroad, were printed on tea towels, calendars and scarves. Today, the same exuberant kitsch is recreated to delight a new generation nostalgic adventurers, collectors of wanderlust and craft enthusiasts.
Original detailed maps, created to this day primarily by Terrell, are hand embroidered, some with as many as 30 cheerful colors threaded throughout the complex and irresistible artwork.
Based in Petaluma CA, the entrepreneurial thread of creativity that has flourished for the last 20 years shows no sign of slowing down. Fortunately a large cottage industry of loyal and talented “hand embroiders” continue to lovingly produce catstudio’s expansive collections– one piece at a time.
“Our Obelisk Home customer can’t resist them. They are joyful, highly personal and of such exceptional quality they make wonderful gifts to be coveted for generations.”
We salute Catstudio for promoting the dying craft of embroidery and for every stitch of craftsmanship that goes into their product.
